Learn what your body mind type is. In Ayurveda, everyone has a particular “dosha” or bodymind type. Once you know what yours is you can follow a diet that is beneficial to you and will improve your digestion. If you are a Pitta type and consume to many acidic, warming, or spicy foods you are literally adding more fuel to the fire. If you are a Vata type and eat too many dry and cooling foods you will have a slow and stagnant digestions that gets “fired up” trying to move things along. If you are a Kapha type and eat too many cool and moist foods, your body will respond by “stoking the fires” to warm things up.

Follow the food guidelines for your dosha. Pitta types tend to have chronic digestion problems that manifest because there is too much “heat” in the body. Often it is recommended that they reduce certain foods, spices and herbs that can create heat. In addition they should add foods and herbs that are cooling and moisturizing. LIke Avacados, coriander, and coconut.

Vata types need to reduce foods, herbs, and spices that are cooling and increase foods that are warming. Some examples are certain squashes and grains, cinnamon, and cardamon.

Kapha types need to reduce foods, herbs and spices that create moisture and cooling. Kaphas don’t do well with the heavy moist qualities of many grains/ rices, bananas, yogurts and cheeses. These types are better to get their grains in the form on breads and crackers; and their fruits in the form of smoothies with greens and citrus.

TIP 3

Follow a seasonal approach. In Ayurveda each person has a specific season when they are most likely to “go off balance”. For Vata it is Fall / WInter, for Kapha it is late winter and Spring, for Pitta it is Summer. By paying extra attention to your food choices during your most vulnerable season you can avoid problems with indigestion. Unfortunate for many , doctors know little about nutrition or the simple basic properties and qualities of food.

Doctors are more familiar with prescribing prescriptions to cover up a symptom rather than educating patients in choices to relieve, heal, or prevent the problem
